A Study of Serum Gastrin Level and Histamine-Stimulated Gastric Acid Secretion in Patients with Peptic Ulcer and Gastric Cancer

Abstract
The study for serum gastrin level and gastric acid secretion by histamine loads was carried out in patients with peptic ulcer and gastric cancer for 9 months from Jan. 1983 through Sept. 1983 at department of general surgery, Kyung Hee university hospital.
Among a total of 47 cases, histamine induced gastric acid secretion were evaluated in 10 healthy control, 7 with gastric ulcer, 12 with duodenal ulcer and 16 with gastric cancer. The serum gastrin levels were measured by means of radioimmunoassay.
1. Serum gastrin concentration in basal state were 87.2¡¾16.1 pg/ml in control group, 86.4¡¾20.4 pg/ml in duodenal ulcer, 95. 1¡¾16. 9 pg/ml in gastric ulcer and 166.0¡¾62.4 pg/ml in stomach cancer, which represented highest value in. stomach cancer.
2. Basal secretion of free acid were 2.88¡¾1.87 mEq/hr in control. group, 4:.42¡¾1. 1mEq/hr in duodenal ulcer, 1.44¡¾0.79 mEq/hr in gastric ulcer. and 0.77+0.41 mEq/hr in stomach cancer, respectively; which represented highest value in duodenal. ulcer.
3. Mean levels of histamine-stimulated acid secretion of free acid. were 9.3¡¾2.5 mEq/hr in control group, 8.63¡¾1.1 mEq/hr in gastric ulcer, 18.3¡¾2.8 rnEq/hr in duodenal ulcer and 2.72¡¾1.4 mEq/hr in stomach cancer, which represented highest level in gastric cancer.
